Performance Poetry – A New Era In Entertainment

It will be an error to say poetry is not gaining grounds in our contemporary world today. The beauty of poetry has skyrocketed far beyond just penning on paper, more like what we call page poetry or discourses. It is now being performed with expressions that sharpens words into realities.

Poetry is a generic activity, I know you might be asking how? But you will agree with me that poetry is the sole expression of one’s emotions through words and this is something we do every seconds as we try to speak. Although, we cannot really classify daily speaking as a full fledged poetry because it might lack its devices such as simile, rhymes scheme, metaphors and the likes.

What then is performance Poetry?Speaking of Performance Poetry, it is an intriguing form of poetry that allows a poet speaks to the minds of people right on stage, performance poetry otherwise called spoken words is like an intense connector that connects every ports of the human mind right to it’s depth.

In time past, when people hear entertainment, what reverberates to their hearing is music, dance, showbiz, comedy and all other related acts, however, forgotten the art of poetry that takes a lot of brainstorming and memorizing. This has made talents of this art to fuse a bit of drama to poetry in order to arrest the attention of the audience.

Amanda Gorman

To this effect, a lot of talents have been hitting huge landmarks, Amanda Gorman, a young Harvard graduate, who happens to be one of the first National Youth Poet laureate, became the first female young poet to perform at a presidential Inauguration earlier this year. Her performance was so powerful that it generated a lot of international recognition, giving her a million followers on Instagram.

Brandon Leake

Another is Brandon Leake. Brandon became the first spoken word poet to win one of the biggest talent show in the world, I am talking about America’s Got Talent (AGT). Brandon didn’t just win but he was the first poet to advance to the finals. I want you to understand that competitions like this are mixtures of different acts but Brandon made poetry to stand tall.

CIA and THEMANI

Similarly, we have the duo of CIA & THAMANI all the way from Nigeria, these two were amazing and became the first poets to go for a School’s talent haunt at Kwara State University, Malete. They won the second prize in that competition but to them, they had achieved the best and set a record of the first ever poets to win a prize.Poetry has been doing a lot of mind blowing things in the entertainment industry through its talents, a more reason people now pay poets to perform in conferences, symposiums and other social gatherings simply because it is now been appreciated like other arts.

However, poets might not get massively paid like musical artists but the fact is that they are being paid, it’s indeed worthy to know the craft has been accepted and appreciated.
