Omah Lay Reacts To Fans Calling His Music Style “Afro-Depression”

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Omah Lay, has responded to fans who refer to his music style as Afro-depression.

Speaking in a recent Wednesday, January 17, 2024, interview with The Beat FM in London, United Kingdom, the musician stated that, as long as his listeners are enjoying his music, he doesn’t care if it is called afro-depression or not. Omah Lay stressed that he prefers to concentrate on making music that is in line with his artistic vision rather than getting sucked into titles and other people’s opinions.

“I just make my music how I want to make it,” Omah Lay said. I make every effort to avoid using titles and any other labels that the outside world tries to place on you.

In line with the notion that clarity will surface once the dust settles, he offered the following viewpoint: “Because, as my guy would always say, ‘When the smokes clear, then you see clearly.”

He continued, “So when you identify with those things, it just… I just make my music, I don’t care what anybody wants to tag it, enjoy it as long as you enjoy the music.”

Regarding the idea that his music is classified as “Afro-depression,” Omah Lay stated that he is receptive to many interpretations. He said: “If you feel like it’s Afro-depression, I am okay with that as long as you enjoy the music. Some other people would dance to it. It’s art. That’s what I make, and I just leave the world to enjoy how they want to enjoy it. The fans have their own opinions, I would never argue with that.
